1889 – First College All – American Team is selected. The team was selected by Caspar Whitney and published in “This Week Sports”. The team included Amos Alonzo Stagg from Yale and all were from the Ivy League.

1927 – Globetrotters play first game. The Lineup for the first game included; Walter “Toots” Wright, Byron “Fat” Long, Willis “Kid” Oliver, Andy Washington and Al “Runt” Pullins. The Globetrotters were paid $75.

1961 – The First NFL Playoff Bowl (Runner up Bowl) was played. Detroit defeats Cleveland 17-16.

1963 – The rift between Cleveland Browns owner Art Modell and head coach Paul Brown reaches a boiling Point. Paul Brown is fired.

1972 – In the NBA the Los Angeles Lakes defeat the Atlanta Hawks 134-90 for their 33rd straight win. The longest winning streak in professional sports.

1979 – AFC Championship. The  Pittsburgh Steelers down the Houston Oilers 27-13. Terry Bradshaw throws for 219 yards and two touchdowns.

1979 – Minnesota North Stars defeat the  Philadelphia Flyers 7-1 to end Philadelphia’s streak of 35 games without a loss.

1982 – A game labeled as “The Epic in Miami,” the San Diego Chargers beat the Miami Dolphins in a 85-degree playoff showdown. 

1992 – Tom Seaver and Rollie Fingers are elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame. 

2007 – Phil Jackson wins his 900th career game as a head coach, becoming the fastest to do so in league history.
