1951 – The Indianapolis Olympians beat the Rochester Royals 75-73 in an NBA record-setting six overtimes. Also recorded as the longest game in NBA History at 78 minutes.

1976 – A 37-year-old who made his fortune selling outdoor advertising in the 60’s and soon after began buying radio and television stations, Ted Turner buys the Atlanta Braves for $12 million.

1980 – The Philadelphia Flyers set an NHL record with 35 straight games without a loss.

1994 – Nancy Kerrigan gets attacked after practice at the Cobo Arena in Detroit Michigan in what would become one of the biggest sports scandals in history. The hitman is Shane Stant bodyguard for rival skater Tanya Harding.   

1995 – Atlanta Hawks’ coach Lenny Wilkens passes the legendary Red Auerbach to become the NBA’s all-time winningest coach with 939 career victories.

1998 – A 23-year veteran of Major League Baseball who ranks 7th on the all-time list of strikeout leaders with 3574. Don Sutton is selected for Baseball’s Hall of Fame.

2013 – NHL reaches an agreement to end the 113-day lockout. During this 60 percent of the regular season was canceled along with the All-Star Weekend and New Year’s Day Winter Classic games.

2015 – Major Baseball Hall of Fame inducts Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, John Smoltz, and Craig Biggio.

2018 – For nearly a decade of broadcasting football games after leaving coaching, Jon Gruden returns as the head coach of the Raiders.

2018 – Playing for the Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota becomes only the second quarterback in NFL history to pull off this feat, scores a touchdown off own pass.
