1872 – The first international soccer game, as recognized by FIFA, takes place as Scotland and England play to a scoreless draw.

1948 – Baseball’s Negro National League disbands.

1956 – Floyd Patterson knocks out Archie Moore in the fifth round to win the world heavyweight title. At 21 years, 10 months, three weeks, and five days old, Patterson becomes the youngest heavyweight champ in history.

1961 – Cubs outfielder Billy Williams is named NL Rookie of the Year.

1971 – The television movie “Brian’s Song” debuts on ABC. The film depicts the friendship of Bears teammates Gale Sayers and Brian Piccolo during Piccolo’s battle with cancer.

1987 – Playing in just his fifth NFL game, Raiders running back Bo Jackson rushes for 221 yards and two touchdowns to go along with a touchdown reception.

1990 – Larry Bird scores career point #20,000. That makes him the fifth player in NBA history, joining Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, John Havlicek, Oscar Robertson, and Jerry West) to score 20,000 points, grab 5,000 rebounds, and tally 5,000 assists in a career.

1991 – San Diego State running back Marshall Faulk becomes the first freshman in NCAA football history to lead the nation in rushing yards and touchdowns.

1991 – The Hobart Brickies win their third football state championship, beating Seymour 20-0.

1993 – The NFL announces a new expansion franchise in Jacksonville, Florida.

1996 – Michael Jordan becomes the 10th player in NBA history to score 25,000 career points. Jordan accomplishes the feat in his 782nd career game, the second fastest in history.

2015 – Lakers great Kobe Bryant announces that he will retire at the end of the season.
