THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY: 11/19

1961 – Houston Oilers quarterback George Blanda throws for 505 yards and seven touchdowns in a win over the New York Titans.

1966 – #1 ranked Notre Dame and #2 ranked Michigan State play to a 10-10 tie in a battle on the college football gridiron.

1977 – The Portage Indians win the football state championship with a 33-14 victory over Evansville Reitz.

1978 – With 31 seconds remaining in a game between the Giants and Eagles, the Giants, who held the lead, elected to run the ball instead of kneeling down. It doesn’t go well as they fumble and it’s recovered by Eagles defensive back Herm Edwards who takes it in for a touchdown, giving his team a 19-17 win. The play is known as “The Miracle at the Meadowlands”.

1983 – Lakers center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar becomes the second player in NBA history to score 30,000 career points.

1992 – Oakland A’s reliever Dennis Eckersley is named AL MVP, making him the ninth player to win a Cy Young and MVP in the same season.

1993 – Oregon and Oregon State play in a scoreless tie. It is the final scoreless tie in college football history as overtime is introduced in 1994.

1993 – Hobart dominates the semi-state round of the football tournament, beating FW Wayne 54-0.

1993 – The Lake Central football team punches their ticket to Indianapolis with a 41-6 win over Homestead in semi-state.

1994 – University of Colorado running back Rashaan Salaam becomes the fourth player in DI football history to rush for 2,000 yards in a season.

1996 – The White Sox sign Albert Belle to a then record five year $55 million contract.

2004 – The Malice at the Palace takes place in Detroit as Indiana Pacers players Ron Artest and Stephen Jackson charge into the stands to fight Pistons fans after Artest was hit with items thrown at him.

2004 – The Andrean 59ers win the northern semi-state with a 34-21 win over New Prairie.

2006 – Jaromir Jagr becomes the 16th.player in NHL history to score 600 career goals.

2019 – Lebron James records a triple-double in a Lakers win over the Thunder, making him the first player in NBA history to record a triple-double against all 30 franchises.

2021 – The Cleveland Indians change their name to the Cleveland Guardians.
