1926 – The Chicago Blackhawks play in the first game in franchise history, beating the Toronto St. Patricks 4-1.

1940 – The Green Bay Packers are the first NFL team to travel by plane to a game.

1953 – The St. Louis Browns officially move to Baltimore and become the Orioles.

1956 – Syracuse defeats Colgate 61-7 in a college football showdown. Leading the way for Syracuse was running back Jim Brown who set an NCAA record for points by an individual player after scoring six touchdowns and kicking seven extra points.

1968 – With the Jets beating the Raiders late in a game, NBC cuts off the broadcast to air the television movie “Heidi”. Fans would later find out that the Raiders scored two touchdowns in the final minute to win 43-32.

1981 – New York Knicks center Bill Cartwright sets an NBA record by making 19 of 19 free throw attempts in a single game.

1989 – The Bishop Noll Warriors football team beats Crawfordsville 32-20 to win the semi-state.

1990 – University of Houston quarterback David Klingler sets an NCAA record by throwing 11 touchdowns in an 84-21 win over Eastern Washington.

1997 – Hockey great Mario Lemieux is inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame. 

2007 – New Jersey Devils goalie Martin Brodeur becomes the second goalie in NHL history to win 500 career games.
