1892 – William “Pudge” Heffelfinger becomes the first professional football player after he receives $500 to play for the Alleghany Athletic Association in a game against the Pittsburgh Athletic Club.

1920 – Kennesaw Mountain Landis is elected to become the first commissioner of Major League Baseball.

1959 – White Sox second baseman Nellie Fox is named AL MVP. 

1969 – Minnesota Twin’s Harmon Killebrew is voted AL MVP.

1970 – After an 0-10 start, the Cleveland Cavaliers win the first game in franchise history, defeating Portland 105-103.

1976 – The Merrillville Pirates win the first regional title in program history, beating SB St. Joseph 21-0.

1980 – Denver Nuggets center Dan Issel becomes the 12thplayer in pro basketball history to score 20,000 career points.

1982 – The Hobart Brickies football team punches their ticket to the state finals, beating FW Snider 15-0 in the semi-state round of the tournament.

1995 – Dan Marino becomes the NFL’s all-time passing yards leader, breaking Fran Tarkenton’s record of 47,003 yards.

2010 – Kevin Love of the Minnesota Timberwolves hauls in 31 rebounds in a game against the Knicks. It’s the first 30 rebound game in the NBA since 1982.

2019 – Former Houston Astros pitcher Mike Fiers reveals that the team stole signs via camera from visiting teams and relayed them to Astros hitters.
