1924 – The Boston Bruins, the first US based franchise in the NHL, is founded.

1946 – The first Basketball Association of America game is played, as the New York Knicks beat the Toronto Huskies. 

1950 – Bob Cousy makes his debut for the Boston Celtics. 

1959 – Montreal Canadiens goalie Jacques Plante becomes the first goalie in NHL history to wear a mask after being hit in the face with a puck.

1964 – Jim Brown becomes the first player in NFL history to rush for 10,000 career yards.

1966 – The NFL awards an expansion franchise to the city of New Orleans.

1966 – Dodgers pitcher Sandy Koufax becomes the first three time Cy Young Award winner in MLB history.

1987 – The New York Jets retire Don Maynard’s #13.

1992 – New York Jets receiver Al Toon becomes the 10th player in NFL history to record a reception in 100 straight games. 

1994 – The Bulls retire Michael Jordan’s #23. The ceremony at the United Center takes two hours.

1998 – Steve Young connects with Jerry Rice on the duo’s 80th touchdown pass, giving them the most for any QB-WR combo in league history.

2000 – Pat Riley becomes just the second coach in NBA history to win 1,000 career games.

2003 – University of Pittsburgh receiver Larry Fitzgerald sets an NCAA record by catching a touchdown pass in 14 consecutive games.
