1950 – Earl Lloyd becomes the first black player to appear in an NBA game, debuting with the Washington Capitols.

1968 – The Milwaukee Bucks pick up the franchise’s first ever win, in its sixth game, beating the Pistons 138-118.

1986 – “Dr. J” Julius Erving announces that he will retire at the end of the NBA season.

1988 – The first Monday Night Football game played in Indianapolis. 

1994 – Venus Williams makes her pro tennis debut at age 14, winning a match at the Bank ofthe West Classic in Oakland, California.

2009 – Replay is used in a World Series game for the first time as it is ruled that Alex Rodriguez hit a home run in a game against the Phillies, not a ball off the wall.

2014 – Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, Frank Thomas, Bobby Cox, Tony LaRussa, and Joe Torre are inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
