1963 – Gordie Howe scores career goal #544, tying Maurice “Rocket” Richard for the most in NHL history.

1973 – The University of Alabama sets an NCAA football record with 823 yards of total offense as part of a 77-6 win over Virginia Tech. The Crimson Tide ran for 743 yards during the game with four rushers (Jim Taylor, Wilbur Jackson, Calvin Culliver, and Richard Todd) each topping 100 yards.

1985 – Billy Martin is fired from his position as manager of the Yankees for the fourth time. 

1995 – The contract finalizing the Cleveland Browns’ move to Baltimore after the season is signed.

2002 – Emmitt Smith breaks Walter Payton’s record for most rushing yards in NFL history, totaling 16,743 career yards.

2004 – The Boston Red Sox win their first World Series title since 1918, completing a sweep of the Cardinals.

2011 – Game 6 of the World Series between the Cardinals and the Rangers, David Freese hits a game-tying 2-run triple in the ninth, later hitting a walk-off home run in the 11th.
