1933 – The Berlin Olympic Committee votes to introduce basketball to the Olympics in 1936.

1940 – For the first time since October 29, 1938 the University of Tennessee football team gives up points in a game as they beat Alabama 27-12. The Volunteers went 71 straight quarters without surrendering a point.

1957 – Maurice “Rocket” Richard scores career goal #500, making him the first player in NHL history to reach the mark.

1960 – The Lakers play their first game as the “Los Angeles Lakers” after moving from Minneapolis. They lose to Cincinnati 140-123.

1987 – The Yankees hire Billy Martin as manager for the fifth, and final, time.

1994 – The University of North Carolina’s women’s soccer team loses after a streak of being unbeaten in 101 straight games as the Tar Heels fall to rival Duke 3-2.

1997 – Cleveland Indians catcher Sandy Alomar hits the 700th home run in World Series history.

2012 – Due the labor strife, the NHL announces cancellations of games through November 1, causing 135 total games to get wiped from the schedule.

2014 – Peyton Manning sets the record for career touchdowns by throwing the 509th of his career, passing Brett Favre for the most in NFL history.

2014 – Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray becomes the first running back in NFL history to rush for 100 plus yards in the first seven games of a season.
