1892 – The entire Hong Kong national cricket team dies in a shipwreck near Taiwan.

1920 – Bill Wambsganns of the Cleveland Indians makes the first unassisted triple play in World Series history.

1920 – The Chicago Cardinals play their first NFL game, ending in a scoreless tie. 

1921 – The Decatur Staleys become the Chicago Staleys, winning their first game under their new name, 14-0.

1961 – The MLB expansion draft is held to add players to both Houston and the New York Mets.

1964 – The Summer Olympics open in Tokyo, Japan.

1979 – Real Cloutier of the Quebec Nordiques becomes the first player in NHL history to score a hat trick in his first career game.
