1916 – Georgia Tech wins the most lopsided game in college football history, beating Cumberland 222-0.

1970 – Willie Shoemaker wins his 6,033rd career race, making him the winningest jockey of all time. 

1984 – Walter Payton becomes the NFL’s all-time leading rusher, breaking Jim Brown’s record of 12,312 yards. He also breaks Brown’s record of 58 100-yard rushing games.

1986 – Steve Yzerman is named captain of the Detroit Red Wings. It’s a position he would hold for over 1,300 career games.

1992 – The Tampa Bay Lightning win the franchise’s first-ever game, beating the Blackhawks 7-3. They are the first expansion team in NHL history to win their first-ever game.

2001 – Rickey Henderson becomes the 25th player in MLB history to record 3,000 career hits.

2001 – Barry Bonds hits his 73rd home run of the season.

2007 – Houston Texans kicker Kris Brown becomes the third kicker in NFL history to make three field goals in a game from 50+ yards out.

2012 – New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees sets an NFL record for consecutive games with a touchdown pass by throwing a score in his 48th straight game.
