THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY: 9/11

1912 – Philadelphia second baseman Eddie Collins sets an MLB record by stealing six bases in a game.

1927 – Babe Ruth hits his 50th homer during his record-setting 60 homerun season.

1928 – Ty Cobb plays in his final MLB game. This will not be the only notable moment for Cobb in this list.

1951 – Florence Chadwick becomes the first woman to swim the English Channel from England to France. It took her 16 hours and 19 minutes.

1956 – Frank Robinson of the Cincinnati Reds ties baseball’s rookie record by hitting his 38th homer of the season.

1956 – Yankee catcher Yogi Berra ties the career record of homers for a catcher, with 236. 

1983 – Pittsburgh Steelers running back Franco Harris becomes the third player in NFL history to run for 11,000 yards.

1985 – Pete Rose becomes baseball’s career hit king by picking up his 4,192nd career hit, passing Ty Cobb for the most all time.

2001 – Major League Baseball postpones all the games scheduled for the day due to the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington DC and Pennsylvania. It is the first time that a full day’s schedule is postponed since D-Day in 1944.

2010 – The Penn State women’s volleyball team has their streak of 109 straight victories snapped in a loss to Stanford. The streak was the second longest for any sport in Division I athletics, trailing only Miami’s men’s tennis team’s unbeaten streak of 137 matches.

2011 – Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton becomes the first rookie quarterback in NFL history to throw for more than 400 yards in his debut.
