1921 – Yankees pitcher Harry Harper ties an MLB record by hitting three batters in one inning.

1922 – The Cubs beat the Phillies 26-23 in the highest scoring MLB game ever.

1960 – The Olympic Games open in Rome, Italy.

1960 – The AFL starts to place player’s names on the back of jerseys. 

1968 – Arthur Ashe becomes the first African American to win the U.S. tennis singles championship. 

1978 – MLB umpires go on strike. The strike lasts all of one day.

1985 – Mets pitcher Dwight Gooden becomes the youngest pitcher in MLB history to win 20 games in a season. Gooden was just 20 years, nine months and nine days old.

1986 – Mark McGwire hits his first career home run.

1991 – Carl Lewis sets a world record in the 100 meter dash, finishing in 9.86 seconds at the world championships in Tokyo.

1996 – Tiger Woods wins the 96th U.S. Golf Amateur Championship. 

2020 – White Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito throws a no-hitter against the Pirates.
