1919 – The Green Bay Packers football team is founded by Curly Lambeau and George Calhoun. The team is named after their sponsor, the Indian Packing Company.

1929 – Babe Ruth becomes the first player in MLB history to hit 500 career home runs.

1961 – Future HOF pitcher, Warren Spahn, gets his 300th career victory in a 2-1 win against the Cubs. 

1980 – Reggie Jackson hits career home run #400.

1984 – Carl Lewis is a part of the gold medal-winning 4×100 meter relay team, giving him his fourth gold at the Los Angeles Olympics.

1984 – The Cincinnati Reds retire Johnny Bench’s #5.

1993 – Red Sox pitcher, Roger Clemens, records his 2,000th career strikeout. 

2015 – For the first time in MLB history, all 15 home teams won their games.

2016 – Michael Phelps becomes the first swimmer in Olympic history to win four consecutive gold medals in one event, winning his fourth straight 200-meter individual medley gold.

2021 – Soccer superstar Lionel Messi signs with Paris Saint-Germain, leaving his longtime club, FC Barcelona.
