1874 – Baseball teams play first game outside of the US, as Boston-Philly play in the British Isles. 

1930 – Uruguay defeats Argentina 4-2 in the first-ever World Cup final.

1932 – The tenth modern Olympics open in Los Angeles.

1959 – Future Hall of Famer Willie McCovey makes his MLB debut for the San Francisco Giants, going 4-4 at the plate.

1962 – Wrigley Field hosts the All-Star Game with the American League winning 9-4.

1968 – Ron Hansen of the Washington Senators records the first unassisted triple play in the majors since 1927.

1976 – US Athlete, Bruce Jenner (Now Caitlin Jenner,) wins the decathlon Olympic gold in Montreal. 

1996 – Tommy Lasorda retires as manager of the LA Dodgers.

2001 – Lance Armstrong becomes the first American to win three consecutive Tour de France championships. All of his wins would eventually be vacated.

2006 – Bruce Sutter, former Cubs reliever, is inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame.
