1933 – Joe DiMaggio’s 61 game hitting streak in the Pacific Coast League comes to an end.

1948 – Babe Ruth makes his final public appearance, showing up at the premiere of “The Babe Ruth Story”.

1962 – Milwaukee Braves pitcher Warren Spahn sets a record for home runs by a pitcher, hitting his 31st of the season.

1984 – Pete Rose, then with the Expos, ties Ty Cobb for the most singles in MLB history with his 3,502nd career single.

1992 – Nolan Ryan strikes out 100 batters in a season for the 23rd straight year.

1996 – American swimmer Amy Van Dyken wins the 50 meter freestyle to become the first US woman to win four gold medals in a single Olympics.

1998 – Three spectators are killed and six are injured by flying debris at the US 500 at Michigan Speeday.
