1913 – Max Carey of the Pittsburgh Pirates scores five times in a game without getting a single hit. Carey reached base on an error and four walks, scoring each time he was on.

1940 – American John Sigmund begins what would be the longest solo swim ever, swimming for 89 hours and 46 minutes from St. Louis to Caruthersville, Missouri in the Mississippi River – a span of 292 miles.

1941 – Red Sox pitcher Lefty Grove picks up career victory #300, which is also his final career win.

1961 – Roger Maris hits a combined four home runs in a double header.

1976 – At the Montreal Olympics, US sprinter Edwin Moses sets an Olympic record time in the 400 hurdles with a time of 47.63 seconds.

1992 – The Olympic Games begin in Barcelona, Spain.
