1876 – Princeton takes first place at the first ever IC4A (Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes Association) track and field meet.

1952 – American Parry O’Brien wins the gold medal in the shot-put at the Helsinki Olympics. O’Brien is the first thrower to use the technique of beginning his motion while facing the back of the circle.

1968 – Arnold Palmer becomes the first golfer in history to reach a million dollars in career earnings.

1973 – Hank Aaron hits career home run #700.

1996 – Wayne Gretzky signs with the New York Rangers.

2006 – Alex Rodriguez not only picks up career hit #2,000, he hits career home run #450 and is the youngest player to reach that mark.

2013 – Chris Froome of Great Britain wins the 100th Tour de France.
