THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY: 7/20

1858 – For the first time, fans had to pay to see a baseball game. Spectators paid 50 cents to watch New York beat Brooklyn 22-18.

1916 – The New York Giants trade legendary pitcher Christy Mathewson to the Cincinnati Reds. Mathewson was immediately named player-manager for the team and only pitched in one game before retiring as a player.

1944 – Nelson Potter of the St. Louis Browns becomes the first pitcher in MLB history to be suspended for throwing spitballs.

1947 – The NFL rules that no team can sign a player that still has college eligibility remaining.

1973 – White Sox pitcher Wilbur Wood loses both games of a double-header against the Yankees.

1976 – Hank Aaron hits career home run #755. It is the final homer of his career.

2003 – Albert Pujols becomes the fourth player in MLB history to total 100 home runs in his first three seasons.
