1914 – After catching a flyball, ending a 3-1 win in 21 innings, Giants outfielder Red Murray is struck by lightning and knocked unconscious.

1941 – Joe DiMaggio goes hitless in a game against Cleveland, ending his 56 game hitting streak.

1974 – Bob Gibson becomes the second pitcher in MLB history to record 3,000 career strikeouts.

1978 – Yankees manager Billy Martin and star player Reggie Jackson get into a fight in the dugout after Jackson refuses to bunt.

1979 – The 50th MLB All Star Game takes place at the Kingdome in Seattle.

1983 – The Michigan Panthers beat the Philadelphia Stars 24-22 in the first ever USFL championship game.

1990 – The Minnesota Twins become the first team in MLB history to record two triple plays in one game.

1994 – Brazil defeats Italy 3-2 on penalties (0-0 after extra time) to win the World Cup.

2005 – Tiger Woods wins the British Open, his 10th major title.
