1936 – Chuck Klein of the Philadelphia Phillies becomes the fourth player in MLB history to have a four homer game.

1951 – Randy Turpin defeats Sugar Ray Robinson to win the middleweight title. It is just the second loss in 133 career fights for Robinson.

1984 – Dwight Gooden of the Mets becomes the youngest pitcher to appear in an All Star Game at 19 years, seven months and 24 days old.

1990 – Wrigley Field hosts the All Star Game. Julio Franco of the Texas Rangers wins MVP.

1992 – The Major Soccer League, the only major nationwide pro soccer league in the US, folds after 14 seasons.

1993 – Kenyan distance runner Yobes Ondieki becomes the first man to run 10,000 meters in less than 27 minutes.

1999 – The US Women’s soccer team defeats China to win the World Cup.
