1877 – The first ever Wimbledon tennis tournament begins. It is the first official grass tournament in tennis history.

1914 – The Boston Red Sox purchase the contract of minor-leaguer Babe Ruth from the Baltimore Orioles.

1922 – Johnny Weissmuller is the first swimmer to complete the 100 meter freestyle in under a minute, setting the world record at 58.6 seconds.

1932 – Ben Chapman of the New York Yankees ties an MLB record with two inside the park home runs in the same game.

1932 – The NFL awards a franchise to Boston. Known as the Boston Braves, they eventually change their name to the Redskins and move to Washington in 1936.

1940 – There’s a shutout in the MLB All-Star game for the first time as the NL defeats the AL 4-0.

1948 – At age 42, Satchel Paige makes his MLB debut, throwing two scoreless innings for the Indians against St. Louis.

1968 – For the first time in NBA history, the reigning MVP is traded as Philadelphia ships Wilt Chamberlain to the Lakers.

1988 – Nolan Ryan becomes the seventh pitcher in MLB history to win 100 games with two different teams.

2000 – Police fire tear gas into the crowd at a World Cup qualifying game between Zimbabwe and South Africa. 12 people are killed in the ensuing stampede.

2006 – Italy defeats France in penalties to win the World Cup.

2009 – Colorado Avalanche center Joe Sakic retires after 21 seasons in the NHL. Sakic finished his career with 625 goals and 1,641 points.

2011 – Derek Jeter hits a home run for career hit #3,000. He’s the first player to reach that milestone while wearing a Yankees uniform.

2016 – Serena Williams ties Steffi Graf’s record of 22 Grand Slam titles.

2018 – David Tepper buys the Carolina Panthers for a record $2.275 billion.
