1869 – The Cincinnati Reds player in their first baseball game, a 41-7 win.
1976 – The Montreal Canadiens complete a sweep of the Philadelphia Flyers to win the Stanley Cup. It’s the 19th Stanley Cup for Montreal.
1980 – The Los Angeles Lakers win the NBA title, defeating Philadelphia in game six. Rookie Magic Johnson, normally a guard, fills in for an injured Kareem Abdul-Jabbar at center and scores 42 points to go along with 15 rebounds and seven assists.
1982 – The New York Islanders win their third straight Stanley Cup, sweeping the Vancouver Canucks.
1985 – Michael Jordan is named NBA Rookie of the Year.
1996 – Sammy Sosa becomes the first player in Cubs history to hit two homers in one innings.
1999 – The New York Knicks become the second #8 seed in NBA history to eliminate a #1 seed, ousting the Miami Heat in five games.
2014 – College of Charleston defeats William & Mary in 23 innings in the second longest baseball game in NCAA history.
