THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY: 3/29

1929 – The Boston Bruins win the Stanley Cup with a  2-1 win over the Rangers, sweeping the best of three series.

1940 – Joe Louis makes short work of Johnny Paychek, knocking him out in the second round to retain the world heavyweight title.

1941 – Wisconsin wins the NCAA men’s hoops tournament, defeating Washington State 39-34.

1960 – Bill Russell sets an NBA Finals record by hauling in 40 rebounds, but the Celtics still lose to the St. Louis Hawks 113-103.

1962 – Elgin Baylor and Jerry West become the first teammates to each score 40 or more points in a playoff game as Baylor puts up 45 and West scores 41. Despite the milestone, the Lakers still lose to the Pistons 118-117.

1982 – Michael Jordan hits a jumper with 16 seconds left to give North Carolina a 63-62 win over Georgetown to capture the NCAA title.

1984 – In the middle of the night, the Colts pack up their facility in Baltimore and move to the City of Indianapolis.

1985 – Wayne Gretzky breaks his own record by recording his 126^th assist of the season.

1990 – Hakeem Olajuwon becomes the third player in NBA history to record a quadruple double, scoring 18 points to go along with 16 rebounds, 11 blocks and 10 assists in a 120-94 Rockets win over the Bucks.

1994 – Jimmy Johnson resigns as coach of the Dallas Cowboys. He led the team to two Super Bowl titles.

2017 – Russell Westbrook sets the NBA record for most points scored as part of a triple-double as he puts up 57 points along with 13 rebounds and 11 assists in a 114-106 Oklahoma City win over Orlando.
