1893 – Auburn beats Alabama 32-22 in the first ever “Iron Bowl”,

1959 – Lee Petty wins the first ever Daytona 500 in controversial fashion. Petty and Johnny Beauchamp cross the finish line side by side with Beauchamp being declared the winner. Three days later, the ruling is switched to Petty by NASCAR founder Bill France Jr.

1962 – Wilt Chamberlain sets an NBA record by shooting 34 free throws in a game.

1980 – The United States Olympic hockey team pulls off “The Miracle on Ice”, defeating the Soviet Union 4-3 in the medal round of the Winter games in Lake Placid. Team captain Mike Eruzione scores the game winner midway through the third period.

2010 – Caltech ends a 310 game conference losing streak, defeating Occidental College in men’s basketball.

2016 – For the first time in 565 consecutive weeks spanning 31 seasons, the University of Tennessee women’s basketball team falls out of the AP Top 25 rankings.

2018 – The US women’s hockey team ends a 20 year gold medal drought, beating Canada 3-2 in a shootout to bring home the gold.
