1895 – The sport of volleyball is invented by WG Morgan in Massachusetts.
1942 – The Philadelphia Phillies temporarily change their name to the “Phils”.
1960 – The AFL and NFL agree to a no tampering pact.
1966 – The NHL expands to double the size of the league, adding teams in Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, and St. Louis.
1971 – Satchel Paige becomes the first Negro Leagues player elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
1980 – Rick Barry of the Houston Rockets is the first player in NBA history to hit eight three-pointers in one game.
1991 – Sugar Ray Leonard competes in his final career boxing match, losing to Terry Norris in 12 rounds.
