1960 – Wilt Chamberlain sets an NBA rookie record by scoring 58 points in a win over the Pistons.

1974 – McDonald’s CEO Ray Kroc buys the San Diego Padres for $12 million.

1980 – The Dutch government orders a boycott of the Olympics.

1981 – The Raiders beat the Philadelphia Eagles 27-10 to win Super Bowl XV. Raiders QB Jim Plunkett is named the games MVP.

1986 – Edmonton’s Paul Coffey sets an NHL record for defensemen by scoring a point in his 28^th consecutive game.

1987 – The New York Giants beat the Denver Broncos 39-20 to win Super Bowl XXI. Giants quarterback Phil Simms wins the MVP.

1989 – In just his fifth season, Michael Jordan scores his 10,000^th career point.

1991 – St. Louis Blues forward Brett Hull becomes the third player in NHL history to score 50 goals in fewer than 50 games.

1995 – The Blackhawks beat the Oilers 5-1 in the first hockey game at the United Center. Chris Chelios scores a goal and adds two assists to lead the team.
