1939 – Eddie Collins, Willie Keeler, and George Sisler are elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
1947 – The NFL adds a fifth on the field official and allows sudden death overtime for the playoffs.
1950 – Jackie Robinson signs the highest (at the time) contract in Dodgers history – $35,000.
1952 – The Dallas Texans become the first NFL franchise to play in the state of Texas. They last one season.
1962 – Jackie Robinson and Bob Feller are elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
1982 – The San Francisco 49ers beat the Cincinnati Bengals 26-21 to win Super Bowl XVI. Niners quarterback Joe Montana is named MVP.
1986 – New York Islanders forward Mike Bossy scores his 1,000th career point.
1990 – Lakers coach Pat Riley becomes the 13th coach in NBA history to win 500 career games. Riley picks up the milestone win in just his 684th career game – the fastest a coach has ever reached the mark.
