1960 – Detroit Lions kicker Jim Martin becomes the first kicker in NFL history to make two field goals over 50 yards in the same game.

1963 – The Yankees hire Yogi Berra as manager.

1974 – The Cubs trade six time All-Star Billy Williams to the Oakland A’s for three players.

1984 – Cubs pitcher Rick Sutcliffe wins the NL Cy Young Award.

1993 – The Toronto Maple Leafs set an NFL record by winning their first nine games of the season.

1993 – Joe Carter hits a walk-off three run homer against the Phillies in the bottom of the ninth, winning the World Series for the Toronto Blue Jays.

1999 – Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden becomes the fifth coach in college football history to win 300 career games, as the Seminoles beat Clemson, coached by Bobby’s son Tommy, 17-14.

2004 – University of Texas running back Cedric Benson becomes the sixth player in Division I football history to rush for 1,000 yards in four consecutive seasons.
