1915 – Woodrow Wilson becomes the first sitting US President to attend a World Series game.

1919 – The Reds beat the White Sox to win the World Series, which would eventually be known for the Black Sox scandal.

1938 – The Cleveland Rams and the Chicago Bears play in one of only four penalty free games in NFL history. The Rams won 14-7.

1986 – Gilbert Perreault of the Buffalo Sabres becomes the 12^th player in NHL history to score 500 career goals.

1988 – Oakland A’s closer Dennis Eckersley becomes the first pitcher in MLB history to save all four games in a championship series as the A’s sweep the Red Sox.

1997 – Legendary University of North Carolina basketball coach Dean Smith retires.

1997 – The New York Rangers become the first team in NHL history to open a season with four straight ties.
