1918 – Players on both the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs threaten to strike during the World Series unless they are guaranteed $2,500 for each player on the winning team and $1,000 for each player on the losing team.

 

1954 – Catcher Ray Katt of the Giants sets an MLB record with four passed balls in an inning while catching knuckleballer Hoyt Wilhelm.

 

1960 – Future Basketball Hall of Famer Jerry Lucas scores 23 points as the US wins their fifth straight men’s hoops gold medal.

 

1961 – Mickey Mantle becomes the seventh player in MLB history to hit 400 career home runs.

 

1967 – White Sox pitcher Joel Horlen throws a no-hitter against the Detroit Tigers.

 

1972 – American wrestler Dan Gable wins the 68kg gold medal at the Munich Olympics. He’s the only Olympic wrestler to not have a single point scored on him during the competition.

 

1989 – Indianapolis running back Eric Dickerson eclipses the 10,000 yard mark for his career in just his 91st game, the fastest in NFL history.

 

1997 – Mark McGwire joins Babe Ruth as the only players in MLB history to hit 50 or more homers in consecutive seasons.

 

2000 – Randy Johnson becomes the 12th pitcher in MLB history to record 3,000 career strikeouts.

 

2006 – Peyton Manning’s Indianapolis Colts defeat Eli Manning’s New York Giants in the first game in NFL history to feature brothers as the starting quarterback for both teams.

 

2016 – Kalen Ballage of Arizona State ties an NCAA record by scoring eight touchdowns in one game.
