1972 – 11 Israeli athletes are taken hostage and later killed by a Palestinian terrorist group at the Munich Olympics.
1989 – Chris Evert’s legendary tennis career comes to an end with a loss in the quarterfinals of the US Open. Evert finishes with a career record of 1,304-145 and 18 Grand Slam titles.
1994 – Jerry Rice becomes the NFL’s career touchdown leader after finding the end zone for the 127th time.
1995 – Cal Ripken Jr. ties Lou Gehrig’s record of playing in 2,130 consecutive games.
1997 – Athens, Greece is selected to host the 2004 Summer Olympics.
2013 – Peyton Manning, then with the Broncos, ties and NFL record by throwing seven touchdown passes in a game.
