1936 – Playing outdoors in poor conditions, the United States defeats Canada 19-8 to win the first ever men’s basketball gold medal at the Berlin Olympics.

1959 – The AFL is organized with franchises in New York, Dallas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Denver and Houston.

1964 – Angels pitcher Bo Belinsky is suspended after attacking a sportswriter.

1971 – St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Bob Gibson throws a no-hitter against the Pittsburgh Pirates. It is the first no-hitter thrown at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh since 1910.

1979 – Lou Brock of the St. Louis Cardinals picks up career hit #3,000.

1981 – Mike Schmidt of the Phillies hits career home run #300.

1982 – Pete Rose has the 12,365th at bat of his career, passing Hank Aaron for the most in MLB history.

1986 – Pete Rose gets career hit #4,256 in a game against the Giants. It is the final hit of his career.

1987 – Oakland A’s rookie Mark McGwire hits his 39th homer of the season, setting a new record for rookies.

1993 – The Yankees retire #44 in honor of Reggie Jackson. It is the 13th retired number in franchise history.

2016 – Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt becomes the first runner to win Olympic gold in the 100 meters three times in a career.
