1925 – Babe Ruth is subbed out of a game for a pinch hitter for the first, and only time in his career. Bobby Veach, who hit for Ruth, flew out.
1936 – Jesse Owens is part of the US 4×100 meter relay team that set a world record at the Berlin Olympics. It is Owens’ fourth gold of the games.
1946 – For the first time in MLB history, all games in the league (eight of them) are played at night.
1975 – The Houston Oilers beat the New Orleans Saints 13-7 in an exhibition game. It is the first football game played at the New Orleans Superdome.
