1889 – John L. Sullivan defeats Jake Kilrain in the last championship bare knuckle boxing fight. The fight lasts 75 rounds.

1941 – Ted Williams hits a three run homer with two outs in the ninth inning to give the AL a 7-5 win over the NL at the All Star Game.

1953 – Notre Dame announces that their football games will air via closed circuit television in theaters for the next five years.

1970 – Ray Hart of the San Francisco Giants is the eighth player in MLB history to drive in six runs in one inning.

1974 – Yankees shortstop Jim Mason ties an MLB record by hitting four doubles in a nine inning game.

2003 – Legendary goaltender Dominik Hasek announces that he will end his retirement and join the Detroit Red Wings.
