THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY: 6/27

1939 – The Brooklyn Dodgers and the Boston Bees play to a 2-2 tie after 23 innings and 5 hours and 15 minutes of game time.

1979 – Muhammad Ali reiterates to the media that his third announced retirement is final. It isn’t.

1980 – Dodgers pitcher Jerry Reuss throws a no-hitter against the Giants.

1986 – Robby Thompson of the San Francisco Giants sets a record he would’ve liked to avoid as he becomes the first player in MLB history to be caught stealing four times in one game.

1988 – The Cincinnati Reds bat out of order against the San Diego Padres in the first inning.

1990 – The New Jersey Nets select Syracuse forward Derrick Coleman with the first overall pick in the NBA Draft.

1992 – Dan O’Brien, part of the famous “Dan & Dave” marketing campaign by Reebok which positioned O’Brien and Dave Johnson as favorites to win the gold medal at the Barcelona Olympics, doesn’t even make the US team after failing in the pole vault.

1992 – The LaPorte Slicers won the baseball state title with a 10-2 victory over Franklin Central.

1993 – Mets pitcher Anthony Young loses his record 24th straight decision.

2001 – The Washington Wizards high school standout Kwame Brown with the first pick in the NBA Draft. In the same draft, the Bulls trade Elton Brand to the Clippers for Tyson Chandler (2nd overall pick) and then draft Thornwood grad Eddy Curry fourth overall. Neither would play more than five seasons in Chicago.

2006 – Roger Federer sets a tennis record by winning his 42nd straight grass court match.

2013 – The Cleveland Cavaliers select UNLV forward Anthony Bennett with the #1 overall pick in the NBA Draft. He would only play four years in the NBA, with only one season being in Cleveland.

2017 – The University of Florida baseball team wins the program’s first ever College World Series championship, sweeping LSU in two games.
