1905 – New York Giants pitcher Christy Mathewson throws a no-hitter against the Cubs.

1935 – James J. Braddock beats Max Baer in 15 rounds for the heavyweight title. This fight is portrayed in the movie “Cinderella Man”.

1937 – Joe DiMaggio hits three consecutive home runs against the St. Louis Browns.

1948 – Babe Ruth appears at Yankee Stadium for the final time in his life.

1957 – Ted Williams becomes the first player in American League history to have two three home run games in a season.

1994 – Cubs second baseman Ryne Sandberg announces his retirement, forfeiting $15.7 million dollars.

1997 – The Chicago Bulls win their fifth NBA title, defeating the Utah Jazz in six games.

2002 – The Detroit Red Wings defeat the Carolina Hurricanes in game five to win the Stanley Cup. Legendary coach Scotty Bowman retires after the game – its his ninth Cup as a coach.

2012 – San Francisco Giants pitcher Matt Cain throws a perfect game against the Houston Astros.

2014 – The Los Angeles Kings win the second Stanley Cup in franchise history, defeating the Rangers in game five.

2017 – The Golden State Warriors win their second NBA championship in three years, beating the Cavs.

2019 – The Toronto Raptors win their first ever NBA title, beating defending champ Golden State.
