THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY: 6/8

1920 – Reds outfielder Edd Roush falls asleep in center during a long argument between managers and umpire Heinie Groh. Groh then goes to wake Roush and ejects him for delay of game.

1934 – The Cincinnati Reds become the first MLB team to use a plane to travel from one city to another, flying from Cincinnati to Chicago.

1955 – The Dodgers option Tommy Lasorda to the minors to make room on the roster for Sandy Koufax.

1969 – The Yankees retire Mickey Mantle’s jersey #7.

1971 – The White Sox draft Peoria Central High School’s Danny Goodwin with the first overall pick in the MLB Draft. Instead, he opts to attend college. Goodwin is later selected #1 overall in 1975 by the Angels. He would go  on to hit 13 career home runs.

1976 – The Blackhawks signing aging legend Bobby Orr to a five year contract. He would go on to play 26 games for the Hawks over two seasons.

1977 – Nolan Ryan strikes out 19 hitters in a game for the fourth time in his career.

1982 – The Lakers win the NBA championship, defeating the 76ers in six games.

1986 – The Boston Celtics defeat the Rockets in game six to win the NBA title.

1989 – The Pittsburgh Pirates score 10 runs in the first inning in a game against the Phillies. Pirates broadcaster Jim Rooker states he would walk from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia if the Pirates lose. Philly goes on to win 15-11 and Rooker makes good on his statement at the end of the season.

2005 – Alex Rodriguez becomes the youngest player in MLB history to reach 400 career home runs.

2013 – The Portage Indians softball team wins the 4A state championship, defeating Franklin Central 2-0.

2018 – The Golden State Warriors win their third NBA title in four years after finishing a sweep of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
