1892 – John J. Doyle of the Cleveland Spiders is the first pinch hitter in baseball history.

1906 – The Cubs scores 11 runs in the first inning against future Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson and the New York Giants. The 19-0 loss is the worst in Giants history.

1932 – Brookly Dodgers pitcher Jack Quinn becomes the oldest player in MLB history to record and extra base hit as the 47 year old slugged a double against the Cubs.

1966 – With the first pick in the MLB Draft the New York Mets select catcher Steve Chilcott. Chilcott is one of three #1 overall picks to never reach the big leagues. Reggie Jackson is selected second.

1977 – The White Sox draft Harold Baines with the #1 overall pick in the MLB Draft.

1982 – Steve Garvey of the Dodgers becomes the fifth player in MLB history to play in 1,000 consecutive games.

1989 – For the ninth time in ten years, Wayne Gretzky wins the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s MVP.

1989 – For the first time in MLB history a game begins outdoors but ends indoors as the SkyDome in Toronto closes part way through a 4-2 Blue Jays win over Milwaukee.

1998 – The Utah Jazz are held to just 54 points by the Bulls in game three of the NBA Finals. It’s the fewest amount of points scored by a team in the shot clock era.

2010 – The Washington Nationals select future MVP Bryce Harper with the #1 overall pick.
