1922 – The United States Supreme Court rules that baseball is a sport and not a business and thus not subject to antitrust laws.

1954 – British runner Diane Leather becomes the first woman to run a mile in under five minutes.

1962 – Buck O’Neil becomes the first African-American coach in MLB history, accepting a job with the Cubs.

1977 – AJ Foyt wins the Indy 500 for a record fourth time. Janet Guthrie becomes the first woman to drive in the race.

1980 – Larry Bird wins the NBA Rookie of the Year Award.

1984 – The Red Sox retire the numbers for Ted Williams (#9) and Joe Cronin (#4).

1985 – At a soccer match held at Heysel Stadium in Belgium, a retaining wall collapses and 39 people are either crushed or trampled to death. Over 400 more people are injured.

1989 – Mike Schmidt announces his retirement from baseball. Schmidt was a 12 time all-star for the Phillies.

1990 – Rickey Henderson steals the 893rd base of his career, breaking Ty Cobb’s record for the most all-time.

2010 – Roy Halladay, then with the Phillies, becomes the 20th pitcher in MLB history to throw a perfect game, shutting down the Marlins in a 1-0 win.
