1930 – Babe Ruth hits home runs in both games of a double header, giving him nine homers on the week.

1935 – The Cincinnati Reds defeat the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1 in the first night game in MLB history. 25,000 fans turned out to watch the game in Cincinnati.

1967 – The AFL awards a franchise to Cincinnati, which would become the Bengals.

1980 – Bobby Nystrom scores an overtime game winner for the New York Islanders, giving them a 5-4 win over the Philadelphia Flyers, and the Stanley Cup.

1981 – The Indy 500 ends in controversy as Mario Andretti, who finished second behind Bobby Unser is declared the winner due to Unser breaking a rule during a slowdown period near the end of the race. The decision will later be reversed with Unser getting credit for the win.

1986 – The Montreal Canadiens win their 23rd Stanley Cup, beating the Calgary Flames in five games.

1988 – Game #4 of the Stanley Cup Final between Edmonton and Boston is postponed with the score tied at three in the second period due to a power failure at Boston Garden.

1990 – The Edmonton Oilers win their fifth Stanley Cup in seven years, defeating the Bruins in five games.

1992 – Al Unser Jr. wins the closest finish in Indy 500 history, beating Scott Goodyear by 43-thousandths of a second, which is barely half a car length.

2009 – Helio Castroneves becomes the ninth driver to win the Indy 500 three times in a career.
