1970 – The NHL adds the Buffalo Sabres and the Vancouver Canucks starting in the 1970-71 season.

1975 – The Kentucky Colonels defeat the Indiana Pacers 110-105 to win the ABA championship.

1977 – Janet Guthrie becomes the first woman driver to qualify for the Indianapolis 500.

1985 – Pete Rose scores the 2,108th run of his career, passing Hank Aaron for the most in National League history.

1991 – The NFL approves the addition of two expansion teams in 1994.

2002 – Mark Prior becomes the 14th pitcher in Cubs history to win his MLB debut.


2002 – Barry Bonds hits his 583rd career home run, tying Mark McGwire for the fifth most all-time.

2003 – Annika Sorenstam becomes the first woman to play on the PGA tour in 58 years.
