1869 – The Cincinnati Red Stockings play in their first game, making them the first professional baseball team.

1871 – The first game of the National Association of Baseball Players is played with Fort Wayne defeating Cleveland 2-0.

1949 – A plane carrying the entire Toronto Serie A soccer team crashes near Turin, Italy killing 31 people.

1954 – The first intercollegiate tennis match in the United States takes place with Yale and Princeton facing each other.

1963 – Milwaukee Braves pitcher Bob Shaw sets an MLB record with five balks in one game.

1965 – Willie Mays hits career home run #512, giving him the most in National League history, passing Mel Ott.

1968 – The Pittsburgh Pipers defeat the New Orleans Buccaneers 122-113 in game seven to win the first ABA championship.

1975 – Houston’s Bob Watson scores the one millionth run in baseball history.

1980 – White Sox first baseman Mike Squires plays catcher in the final inning of an 11-1 loss to the Brewers. Squires is the first lefty to catch since 1958.

1999 – The New Jersey Devils become the first team in pro sports history to be the top ranked team in the playoffs and get eliminated in the opening round in consecutive seasons.

2002 – Barry Bonds hits his 400th home run as a member of the San Francisco Giants. He’s the first player in MLB history to have 400 home runs with one team and 100 with another (Pittsburgh Pirates).

2018 – Angels first baseman Albert Pujols picks up career hit #3,000.
