1910 – The Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States is renamed the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

1936 – Yankees outfielder Joe DiMaggio picks up three hits in his MLB debut.

1952 – The Kentucky Derby is aired on television for the first time.

1970 – The New York Knicks beat the Lakers in game seven to win the NBA title.

1977 – USC running back Ricky Bell is the first pick in the NFL Draft, selected by the Tampa Bay Bucs.

1979 – The Buffalo Bills draft Ohio State linebacker Tom Couisneau with the first pick in the NFL Draft. The Bills acquired the pick from the 49ers in a trade for running back OJ Simpson. However, Couisneau never plays for the Bills, electing to sign with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadien Football League, who offered him double the money that the Bills did.

1980 – San Francisco Giants first baseman Willie McCovey hits his 521st and final career home run.

1980 – Fergie Jenkins, then with the Texas Rangers, becomes the fourth pitcher in MLB history to win both 100 games in the American League and National League.

1986 – Cubs third baseman Ron Cey hits career home runs #300 and #301 in the same game.

1986 – Yankees first baseman, and Indiana native, Don Mattingly, becomes the sixth player in MLB history to hit three sac flies in one game.

1992 – Eddie Murray, then with the Mets, hits career home run #400 – the 24th player in MLB history to reach that mark.

2018 – Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan is the first player in NFL history to sign a contract paying him $30 million or more a season, agreeing to a $150 contract extension.
