1949 – Kentucky wins their second straight NCAA men’s basketball title, beating Oklahoma State 46-36.
1952 – The NCAA men’s basketball tournament debuts the “Final Four” format.
1972 – The Lakers win their 69th game of the season, setting an NBA record that would stand for 24 years.
1973 – UCLA wins their seventh straight NCAA men’s hoops title, beating Memphis 87-66. Bill Walton leads the Bruins by scoring 44 points.
1974 – George Foreman knocks out Ken Norton in the second round to retain the world heavyweight title.
1979 – Michigan State, led by Magic Johnson, beats Larry Bird’s Indiana State Sycamores 75-64 in the national championship game. It set the record for most viewers for a college basketball game.
1994 – John Stockon becomes the second player in NBA history to record 2,000 career steals.
2006 – George Mason upsets top-ranked UCONN to become the first 11 seed to advance to the Final Four since 1986.
