1958 – Ted Williams signs a contract with the Boston Red Sox for $135,000 making him the highest paid player in baseball history at the time.

1970 – The NBA expands to 18 teams by adding franchises in Buffalo, Cleveland, Houston, and Portland.

1990 – Brett Hull of the St. Louis Blues scores his 50^th goal of the season. With the milestone, Hull and his father Bobby become the only father-son combo in NHL history to have 50 goal seasons.

1998 – The Minnesota Twins trade All-Star second baseman Chuck Knoblauch to the Yankees for four minor leaguers.

2005 – The New England Patriots win their third Super Bowl in four years, defeating the Philadelphia Eagles 24-21 to win Super Bowl XXXIX. Patriots receiver Deion Branch is named MVP.

2011 – New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady becomes the first player in NFL history to be a unanimous choice for the AP MVP award. Brady received all 50 votes for the award.

2011 – The Green Bay Packers win Super Bowl XLV with a 31-25 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is the game’s MVP.
