1911 – Led by Jim Thorpe, the Carlisle Indian School football team defeats nationally ranked Harvard 18-15. Thorpe scores every point for his team – a touchdown, extra point and four field goals.

1926 – Future Hall of Famer Eddie Collins is released as Player/Manager of the White Sox.

1981 – Dodgers pitcher Fernando Valenzuela becomes the first rookie to win a Cy Young Award.

1988 – The Crown Point Bulldogs football team wins the first regional championship in program history, beating Mishawaka 28-27.

1988 – The Hammond High Wildcats beat Hobart 31-28 in overtime to win the first regional football title in program history.

1994 – The Lowell Red Devils beat Hobart 28-25 in football to win the regional for the first time.

1997 – The WNBA announces expansion franchises in Detroit and Washington DC to begin play in 1998.

1997 – The NHL’s expansion Columbus franchise, which would begin play in 2000, announces that the team name will be the Blue Jackets, in honor of Union soldiers during the Civil War.

2002 – Jerry Rice, then playing with the Raiders, becomes the first player in NFL history to score 200 career touchdowns after catching a TD pass from Rich Gannon.

2004 – Denver Nuggets guard Earl Boykins becomes the shortest player in NBA history (5’5”) to score 30 points in a game.

2006 – For the first time in Bobby Bowden’s 31 years as coach of Florida State, the Seminoles are shut out in a home game, losing to Wake Forest 30-0.

2007 – Brett Favre joins Dan Marino as the only QBs in NFL history to throw for 60,000 career yards.

2012 – Tony Gonzalez, then with the Falcons, becomes the first tight end in NFL history to catch 100 career touchdown passes.

2017 – Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson becomes the first QB in NCAA football history to have two seasons with 1,000 yards rushing and 3,000 yards passing.

2017 – Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski becomes the first coach in men’s Division I college basketball history to win 1,000 games at one school.
