THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY: March 12

1937 – Central Missouri State wins the first ever National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) tournament.

1966 – Blackhawks forward Bobby Hull sets an NHL record with his 51^st goal of the season.

1994 – The University of Arkansas men’s track and field team wins their 11^th straight NCAA Indoor Championship. The 54 point margin of victory is the largest in the 30 year history of the meet.

2002 – Siena, with a 17-18 record, becomes the first men’s basketball team in 47 years to have a losing record yet win an NCAA tournament game, defeating Alcorn State 81-77 in one of the play-in games.

2003 – Damian Costantino, an outfielder for Division III Salve Regina (Newport, RI) has his NCAA record 60 game hitting streak come to an end. Costantino broke Robin Ventura’s 16 year old record the previous day and then went hitless for the first time in nearly two years.

2008 – The Houston Rockets become the third team in NBA history to win 20 straight games.

2009 – Syracuse and UCONN play in the second-longest Division I men’s basketball game ever, with the Orange winning in six overtimes.

2018 – Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin scores his 600^th career goal.

2020 – Two sports governing bodies announce major changes due to COVID. The NCAA announces that the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments are cancelled with the NHL announces the postponement of its season.
