1918 – Boston’s Tris Speaker is suspended for the remained of the season after an assault on umpire Tom Connolly.

1921 – Babe Ruth begins a streak of extra base hits in nine straight games.

1960 – White Sox slugger Ted Kuzewski’s three run homer is disallowed because the umpire called time right before the pitch.

1977 – Nolan Ryan records 300 strikeouts in a season for the fifth straight year.

1987 – Phillies third baseman Mike Schmidt passes Ted Williams and Willie McCovey on the all-time home run list with his 522nd career homer.

1990 – Ryne Sandberg becomes the first second baseman in baseball history to hit 30+ home runs in consecutive seasons.

1991 – For the first time in 25 years a baseball game is started with both starting pitchers having thrown a perfect game in their career. Dennis Martinez started for the Expos while Tom Browning took the hill for the Reds.

2004 – Argentina beats Italy 84-69 to win the men’s basketball gold medal at the Athens Olympics.
